How Long Does SEO Take to Work?

The TL;DR: Profile and listing fixes can show movement within weeks. Competitive organic rankings take months. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing an outcome they cannot control.

Different parts of SEO move on completely different timescales, which is why the honest answer to this question is a breakdown rather than a number. Profile and listing work can show movement inside a fortnight. Competitive organic rankings take months. Treating them as one timeline is what causes most of the frustration.

The fastest wins are corrections rather than improvements. Verifying a Google Business Profile, fixing a wrong primary category, correcting business details that disagree across directories — these remove things that were actively holding you back, and Google tends to respond to them quickly. If your profile had a genuine problem, a fortnight is a reasonable window to see the map results shift.

The middle band is roughly one to three months. This is where review velocity, photo activity and location-specific content start to compound. You will usually see it first in map impressions and calls rather than in your own searches for your own business name, which is why tracking matters more than checking.

Competitive organic rankings are the slow band, and they are slow for a structural reason. The pages currently above you have been accumulating links, content and engagement for years. Closing that gap is a matter of consistent output over quarters, not a switch anyone can flip. In a dense market it can take six to twelve months to move meaningfully on the terms with the most demand.

Two things distort these timelines. Starting condition matters enormously — a business with a claimed profile and a working site sees movement much sooner than one starting from nothing. And prior damage matters more still. Where a previous provider built spam links or published bulk thin content, the first stretch is spent undoing rather than building, and it will feel like nothing is happening because in visible terms, nothing is.

Be careful with anyone who promises a ranking position by a date. Rankings are not something an agency controls — they are an outcome produced by an algorithm nobody outside Google can see. What an agency can control is what work gets done and when, and a provider unwilling to commit to that is telling you something.

That distinction is why we report on work done and leads attributed rather than on ranking positions. You see what was published, what it earned, and which channel produced each enquiry — in your own accounts, because the site, the analytics and the ad accounts are in your name. We cannot promise you position three by March, and we would not trust anyone who did.

If you want a realistic timeline for your specific market rather than a general one, a discovery call will get you that, along with the plan behind it.
